The Adalaj Stepwell, also called Rudabai ni Vav, is a five-storey historic stepwell in the village of Adalaj. District and national tourism sources describe it as a late-15th-century construction, noted for its carved pillared halls, an octagonal open well and flights of steps descending to the water.
The stepwell was never only a source of water; it was also a place of rest and social gathering for traders, pilgrims and locals. The carvings show floral motifs, geometric patterns, divine figures and scenes of everyday life. Visitors to Adalaj Stepwell can easily combine nearby landmarks — Akshardham in Gandhinagar and Trimandir in Adalaj.

Legend & heritage
Queen Rudabai's tale
The most popular legend is of Queen Rudabai — when the stepwell was completed she prayed for her late husband and dedicated herself to the well; hence the stepwell is called a monument of love and devotion. The story lives on across generations in Gujarati folk songs and tales.

The stepwell has five storeys with rooms, shaded galleries and flights of steps leading down to the water. At its centre is an octagonal open kund. The carving on pillars, arches and ceilings blends Hindu, Jain and Islamic styles.
